Avian Influenza

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) continues to infect and threaten commercial and backyard poultry in the United States. Most poultry species are susceptible to infection. The prompt diagnosis of HPAI is the critical first step in containing this devastating disease. The Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (OADDL) works closely with the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (ODAFF) to test birds for HPAI. OADDL is approved by the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) to perform testing for HPAI.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has posted the following information to assist poultry owners and producers in dealing with suspected HPAI cases:

Virulent Newcastle Disease

Virulent Newcastle Disease (vND), formerly known as Exotic Newcastle Disease, is a contagious and fatal viral disease affecting the respiratory, nervous and digestive systems of birds and poultry. The disease is so virulent that many birds and poultry die without showing any clinical signs.
